The Unfinished Column
The Unfinished Column is a kinetic columnar installation inspired by architectural elements of the Hsinchu City Hall. Through parametric design and mechanical articulation, the work introduces a column that did not originally exist within the building. Moving in a slow, twisting gesture, the column evokes an echo of architectural memory, continuously shifting between deconstruction and recomposition.
As the viewer's gaze follows the movement, their perspective gradually transitions from a horizontal drift to an upward focus. This shift invites a renewed awareness of the structural context and often-overlooked details embedded within the space.
The term "unfinished" refers to a state of incompletion and ongoing formation. Much like the processes of architectural preservation and adaptive reuse, the cultural significance of such structures resides in a dynamic negotiation between history and the present. The work responds in abstract form to the structural and ornamental vocabulary of the surrounding architecture. Through its unstable motion, the column reveals a disrupted sense of order, where memory is continuously reconfigured and reinterpreted within a contemporary context. It remains perpetually unfinished.
